The outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in Liberia remains on the increase, the United Nations Mission in Liberia has stated in a daily security information report.
"The epidemic shows no sign as yet of stabilization and reduction. State authorities remain unable to respond in a significant manner and the international response remains limited", stated the report. The UN Mission is predicting that cases of the deadly virus will rise in the coming days because Liberian authorities are not able to address the current situation.
"It is evident that the Liberian authorities are not able to address the present state of the country. Consequently, it can be anticipated that many additional EVD cases will arise in the coming days". Highlighting the challenges facing the fight against Ebola UNMIL cited logical constraints, delays in responding to calls from communities.
The Mission noted "The Ebola response Team based in the Region 3 Lofa County has reported that because of logistical constraints and the overwhelmed Case Management Center there are long delays in their response time to calls from the community concerning the sighting of EVD suspected cases within Voinjama City. It is also reported that the town of Kolahun in Region 3, Lofa County has seen a rise in the spread of EVD with the Mayor and his son being the latest victims to contract the Disease".
The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned the number of Ebola cases could rise to 20,000 as doctors in Liberia say the deadly virus is now spreading so rapidly they can no longer deal with the crisis.
